Book Cover Design forIndie Authors

Genre-informed covers that earn the click — print and ebook ready, KDP and IngramSpark compliant.

Readers judge books by their covers. This isn't a cliché — it's a documented fact of online retail behavior. Before a reader reads your description, they see your cover thumbnail in a search result. In half a second, they've decided whether to click. A professionally designed cover doesn't just look good; it signals genre, tone, and quality in a way that earns that click. An amateur cover — regardless of how good the book inside is — signals that the book inside might not be worth the time.

What is book cover design?

Book cover design is the creation of a custom visual identity for your book — front cover, spine, and full wraparound for print, plus a separate optimized file for the ebook thumbnail. A professional book cover is genre-informed (romance covers look like romance covers; thrillers look like thrillers), typographically readable at thumbnail size, and technically correct for print-on-demand production. Cover design for self-published authors on Amazon KDP requires both a standalone front cover file for ebook distribution and a full-wrap PDF for print-on-demand — correctly sized for your trim size and page count. Once your cover is ready, we can pair it with print formatting and ebook formatting to prepare your complete book for publication.

Who is this for?

Authors preparing to publish on Amazon KDP who need a competitive cover

Self-published books on Amazon sit in the same search results as traditionally published titles. Your cover thumbnail is the first thing a potential reader sees — before the title, the blurb, or the reviews. It has to look like it belongs in that company.

Authors who received feedback that their current cover is hurting sales

Cover design is one of the highest-leverage investments a self-published author can make. If your book has good content but poor sales, a weak cover is often the first thing to investigate. A professional redesign can meaningfully shift conversion.

First-time publishers who don't know what makes a good cover

Genre conventions for cover design are not intuitive — they vary significantly between romance, thriller, literary fiction, non-fiction, and children's books. We research the visual conventions of your specific category and apply them, so your cover signals the right things to the right readers.

Our process

  1. 01

    Submit your brief

Tell us about your book: genre, target audience, tone, mood, and any comparable titles with covers you admire or want to steer away from. The more specific your brief, the stronger the initial concepts.

  2. 02

    Genre research and concept development

We do all the research and creative work — studying your genre's current visual conventions, bestseller cover trends, and any specific direction from your brief. Then we produce up to 3 distinct concepts for your review.

  3. 03

    Concept selection and revisions

You select the concept that best fits your book and share revision notes with us. Two full rounds of revisions are included — typography, color, layout, or imagery direction. We share progress updates at each round; it's your book, and the cover needs to feel exactly right to you before we move on.

  4. 04

    Final file delivery

Once you approve the final design, we deliver all files: print-ready PDF for KDP and IngramSpark, ebook-optimized front cover, and all source files. We handle everything — your cover is ready to upload the moment you give the go-ahead.

Frequently asked questions

You receive up to 3 initial concepts to choose from. After selecting your preferred concept, 2 full rounds of revisions are included. Revision rounds cover changes to typography, color, layout, and imagery direction. Additional revision rounds can be added if needed — we'd rather get it right than rush to delivery.

A professional book cover does four things: it communicates genre at a glance, it uses typography that's readable at thumbnail size, it has visual hierarchy that draws the eye to title and author name in the right order, and it looks as polished as the best-selling titles in its category. The most common mistakes in self-published covers are typography that doesn't match the genre, imagery that reads poorly at small sizes, and design that looks like it was built from a template.

Yes. Every cover project includes both formats: a standalone front cover for ebook distribution (JPEG/PNG, RGB color) and a full wraparound (front, spine, back) for print-on-demand — correctly sized for your trim size and page count, and delivered as a print-ready PDF in CMYK color.

Most cover design projects are completed in 2–3 weeks from brief to final files, including concept presentation and revision rounds. Rush timelines may be available — contact us to discuss. We'd rather take the time to get it right than deliver a cover you're not fully confident in.

Yes. If you have licensed imagery, commissioned illustration, or your own photography that you want incorporated, we'll work with what you provide. We'll advise on whether the image resolution is sufficient for print, and can source additional licensed imagery to complement it if needed.
